Aforism

My last typography assignment: aforism written with italic script. I chose my aforism to be "Anchor yourself to something special..." I also wanted to paint an achor with watercolors.

I am satisfied with the painting part but the typography isn't that good. It looks that the text doesn't fit there, maybe it's too big. I only have two really good calligraphy pens and the other one is really small. So I needed to use the wider pen and apparently it was too big.

Calligrapy lesson 2

I couldn't participate in the second lesson so I did italic capital letters at home. It was much more difficult to do upper case than lower case. Straight lines were longer and you need to move your hand more. And then I couldn't keep it steady. Moooore practice...

Typography in old Rauma

Earlier I found some typography from nature. This assignment was a little bit easier: we needed to find three good and three bad typography examples from the city. I took my pictures from old Rauma.
My first good typography example is the signboard of Ruokapuoti Lumo. I like that there is two different fonts and they both are quite simple, sans-serif fonts. In the lumos font there is nice round shapes in each letter. It's clever to use also negative space in logo.
The second good example is the signboard of Jarin Kuvakauppa. It's a photography shop so there is a camera inside of the sign. I like the handmade stencil look of the text in the sign. Even though there isn't that much room around the text, it still looks good.
My third example is a hairdresser mama. The font is really visible and different than others, you can't miss the text when you walk by. I like the thing that there is one letter in each windowpane. The font of texts in the bottom of windows is a simple sans-serif font which is good. I believe that the light sign inside the hairdresser looks nice in the evenings.
My first bad example is a draperyshop's window. I think that the fonts are ok but the color of upper text is too light for that light background. The logo would look nice with darker things behind it.

The second bad example is a photography studio's window. The is too too many fonts mixed together so it doesn't look stylish. The web address is also hard to read.
Third example is this sign of a bar. Apparently the person who wrote this knows nothing about calligraphy. This kind of sign in the middle of beautiful old Rauma? It's just awful.
And this is an extra picture! A really creative door of café Soppi. Handwritten texts with many colours are cute.

Calligraphy lesson 1

In our first calligraphy lesson we explored how to use calligraphy pens. We practiced lines and curves. Sounds quite simple but when the point of pen needs to be in 45° angle and your hand needs to move without twisting your wrist.. well, it's not that simple!

In the end of the lesson I was brave enough to write italic small caps. There is a certain order how to draw lines.. and you need to draw your lines from top to bottom.

Typography in Yyteri Beach

This time our assignment was to find typographical signs and marks in the nature. We walked around the Yyteri Beach area and photographed sings we saw.

While doing the assignment, I noticed that it's easiest to find for example letters V, A, Y and of course I. It was really hard to find letters with round shapes like S and B. Here is some typography I found.
